Flora began making donuts when she was 8 years old, helping her widowed mother provide for her and her 7 other siblings. At the age of 17, she left home and her mother’s business to pursue her own career in nursing. However, she became a nurse during war time and was injured in a crossfire, narrowly escaping with her life. It was then that she decided to go back to her roots, opening a donut shop based off her grandmother’s recipe and her mother’s inspiration.
Flora opened Delicias del Norte in 2005 with a friend who had studied entrepreneurship through Thunderbird for Good programs. Several years later, Flora heard about Thunderbird for Good’s 10,000 Women opportunity sponsored by Goldman Sachs and the U.S. Department of State. She attended in June 2012 where she and fellow female entrepreneurs learned business skills to take back and apply to their businesses in Latin America.
“The key to my success was that I put into practice everything I learned; this has made the difference in my small business.” -Flora Ortiz
Flora has worked closely with a few mentors and organizations that have helped her and her business. Her mentor through 10,000 Women provided support with her program completion and graduation. She also worked with TechnoServe, a non-profit that provides business solutions through technology. Through TechnoServe, she met another business owner, Claudia Neyra, who has helped her overcome her fear of public speaking. Over the years Flora has received numerous awards and recognition for female entrepreneurship, leadership, innovation, and sustainability.
