Thunderbird’s Master of Leadership and Management (MLM) with specialization in Family Business prepares students to be global future leaders who will excel in today’s complex world. The program provides students with global business acumen such as accounting, strategy, marketing, leadership, digital transformation, data analytics, and sustainable business. In family business specialization, students will uncover the principles that contribute to the longevity and adaptability of family enterprises. They will learn how family entrepreneurs balance tradition with innovation and blend a legacy of the past with the needs of the future. They will explore how to navigate transitions, manage family dynamics, develop strategies to foster harmony and efficiency, and create enduring, values-driven companies that thrive for generations.

Curriculum

The MLM curriculum is designed to be 50% online and 50% in person. The in-person component consists of 5-day intensive learning sessions held in Singapore for each course, distributed throughout the year.


The program runs for 12 months, from June to May. See below for more details.

Course schedule

In-person courses run for five days, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Asynchronous online courses are seven weeks each. There is a one-week break in between each course, except in June.

Applicants for the program must fulfill the graduate college requirements and submit the graduate program application by the application deadline.

MLM Family Business Courses

TAM 582 Communicating and Negotiating in a Dynamic Global World

Improves global mindset and negotiation skills by focusing on cross-cultural issues, communication issues and negotiation in cross-cultural environments. Provides an in-depth examination of culture, its managerial implications and negotiation. Explores various methodologies to understand and measure national cultures. Embarks on a rigorous and practical journey to examine the impact of national culture, no matter how it is measured, on communication dynamics in a cross-cultural environment and focuses on specific skill sets to help students succeed in such situations.

TGM 586 Global Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Business

Presents an overview of entrepreneurship and sustainable business. Involves acquiring a basic understanding of both the global entrepreneurship space and the sustainable business space. Students become familiar with the definitions applicable to these two topics, the basic place and role of these two domains in the global economy, and the significance of the two domains in the creation of jobs and sustainable economic activity.

TGM 598 Global Family Business

This comprehensive course provides a deep exploration into the dynamics, governance, and strategic management of global family businesses. Participants will delve into key economic drivers, market trends, and the distinct characteristics that shape family enterprises, including succession planning, digital transformation, sustainability, and international expansion. Through engaging discussions, practical frameworks, and case studies of prominent businesses, attendees will gain insights into effective leadership transition, financial management, estate planning, and innovative strategies for growth and resilience. Additionally, the course addresses the increasing roles of women and next-generation leaders, structured philanthropy, crisis management, dispute resolution mechanisms, and emerging future trends including AI-driven business models, ESG integration, and digital assets, equipping participants with essential tools to ensure long-term sustainability and competitive advantage.

TAM 511 Global Accounting: Managing with Numbers

Covers the fundamentals of financial accounting and managerial accounting in a global environment. Financial accounting focuses on providing useful information to users for external decision making. By understanding the structure and process of preparing a balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows, students learn how to interpret, analyze and evaluate domestic and international companies. Managerial accounting focuses on providing useful information for internal decision making. By identifying and understanding different types of cost information, students learn how to utilize and prepare cost-volume profit analysis, relevant cost analysis, activity-based costing and performance evaluation within global organizations.

TGM 598 Asia Trends and Opportunities for Family Businesses

This course provides an in-depth exploration of economic growth trends from global, regional, and national perspectives. It examines the forces shaping economic development, with a particular focus on the impact of geopolitical shifts, trade policies, and the rise of anti-globalization sentiments. Through theoretical frameworks and empirical case studies, students will analyze key drivers of economic growth, such as international trade, foreign direct investment (FDI) flows, and income distribution, across different regions—including China, ASEAN, and Singapore. A special emphasis will be placed on the implications of economic growth for wealth management and the evolving landscape of family businesses. Students will gain a macroeconomic perspective on how economic trends influence capital flows, business innovation, and financial decision-making. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with analytical tools to assess economic risks and opportunities in an increasingly uncertain global environment.

TAM 557 Global Marketing in a Digital Age

This curriculum emphasizes analytical and managerial decision tools for creating competitive advantage, as well as the similarities and differences in domestic and global marketing. Learners will examine the ways that digital transformation has influenced the role of analytics in today’s hyper competitive organizations, while also focusing on the micro topics used to execute and implement strategies in the first part of the course. Learners will cover the marketing mix (4Ps) in detail, namely pricing, product, promotion, and place, and examine how these tools add value to firms in an international setting. By the end of this course, learners will gain insight into how the 4Ps can effectively help establish price while communicating and delivering value to customers and important stakeholders using quantitative and qualitative analyses.

TAM 542 Global Leadership and Personal Development

The goal of this course is to empower learners and professionals around the world to be ethical, creative, agile and effective leaders under two critical contextual conditions: the technological transformations of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in conjunction with cultural dynamics within and across societies in a Globalized World. This course provides learners and professionals across regions with the “Digital Global” mindsets and skillsets to be successful leaders in the XXI century developing competencies in areas such as purpose and vision, ethics and integrity, agility and resilience, innovation and creativity.

Personal leadership development is optimized by grounded reflection, self-knowledge and continuous learning as we interact with others. Therefore, the personal development part of this course cultivates introspective and skill-building competencies that include conceptual grounding that is based in an experiential learning focus. Discusses self- and other-awareness and engages in group/team interaction, as well as conducts individual self-assessments and individual feedback. We focus on leadership as a craft, with a set of strategies that can be learned at the personal, team/group, organization, and system levels.

TGM 598 Institutional Investor, Family Office Principles & Professional Services

This specialized course equips participants with a deep understanding of institutional investing strategies, family office principles, and professional services essential for effective wealth management and governance. Attendees will explore foundational elements and contemporary trends within family offices, emphasizing best practices in governance, succession planning, and next-generation leadership development. The curriculum includes practical insights into portfolio management, strategic investments, and global incentive frameworks through comprehensive case studies and engaging panel discussions. The course culminates with exclusive site visits to prominent family offices and enterprises. Participants will gain actionable insights and professional competencies crucial for navigating the complex dynamics and responsibilities inherent in institutional investing and family office management.

TAM 530 Data Analytics and Digital Transformation in a Global World

Over the past 60 years, advances in digital Information Technology (IT) have enabled organizations to develop increasingly sophisticated digital systems that provide comprehensive real-time information and enable business innovation across strategy, processes, products and services. Today, almost every enterprise process across sectors is enabled by, and often dependent upon, digital technologies. IT has moved far beyond the support and automation of back office clerical activities into the frontier of being a key enabler of innovations in competitive strategy, product/service design, process redesign, and disruptive new value creation.

This course will help learners develop an informed understanding about effectively managing the identification, acquisition, deployment, adoption and use of appropriate information and digital technology resources that enable business innovation, culminating in the realization of business value. This understanding will be situated within the broader global context of digital disruption and its often asymmetric or unintended impacts. The overarching goal is to develop capabilities in questioning and critical thinking in this area fundamental for sustainable competitive success in the 21st century.

TAM 541 Strategy in a Competitive World

Focuses on choices that have an impact on the performance of the entire organization or business start up. Includes the problems faced by, and the decisions made by, executive leaders who have to balance the needs and expectations of stakeholders including customers, shareholders and employees with the requirements of local country practices and government regulations. Analyzes problems and decisions from the point of view of the founder, general manager or chief executive who has responsibility for the welfare of the entire organization. By focusing on policy decisions, concerns the choice of goals as well as the organization; management and deployment of scarce resources to pursue these goals within the context of an imperfect, changing and competitive world.
