Curriculum

Core curriculum

The MGM’s one-of-a-kind cutting edge curriculum includes 18 credit hours of core courses, including; 6 credits from our overseas applied consulting lab, 24 elective credits for concentrations and languages, and one credit from career development.

 

*Spring incoming students on an accelerated pathway must complete an applied learning experience during the first summer of their MGM program. To fulfill this summer requirement, students may choose one of the following: (1) Global Challenge Lab, (2) applied learning-based academic course or (3) Internship registered for academic credit. Each of these options will satisfy the minimum required summer credit hours for the program.

Global Affairs

Understanding the intersection between business and politics is more important than ever for managers in both the private and public sectors. World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Survey and Jobs of the Future by McKinsey Global Institute 2017 suggested "transdisciplinary, virtual collaboration, cross-cultural competency" as important job skills for the future. The Master of Global Management, Global Affairs concentration will provide students the knowledge base and hard skills needed to succeed in the growing job markets at the nexus of global business and politics.

This concentration focuses on students who aspire to take on management positions in government agencies such as the Department of Commerce, the State Department and the Treasury Department; international organizations, such as the World Bank and World Trade Organization; and major companies that require analysts to monitory policy trends, managers to oversee global supply chains and representatives to present business interests to governments (both domestic and foreign).

Global Entrepreneurship

Global Entrepreneurship Monitor 2017-18, Global Report, suggested that entrepreneurship activities continue to grow globally. Increasingly, the activities were triggered by opportunities rather than by necessity that drove creativity for many decades. The new digital technological transformation had created tremendous opportunities, hence the increase in the need for new, innovative ventures. Additionally, the report also found that the change in attitude towards entrepreneurship and regulations in various countries had perpetuated entrepreneurship activities. To meet this market need, Thunderbird has designed the Global Entrepreneurship concentration within the Master of Global Management degree program.

This concentration is offered to students who are interested in starting their own business, or who need to be entrepreneurial in the organizations they work for. This concentration will sharpen your entrepreneurial skills, help develop business plans for global enterprises, and promote innovation and economic growth globally.

Similarly, advances in technology have made programming and data analysis in-reach to less technically trained individuals. This has created a class of hybrid jobs that combine digital skills with marketing and design (Burning Glass, 2015). The World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Survey and Jobs of the Future by McKinsey Global Institute 2017 suggested "transdisciplinary, new media literacy, virtual collaboration" as important job skills for the future. In response to this trend, Thunderbird has designed the Global Digital Transformation concentration within the Master of Global Management degree program.

This concentration is offered to students interested in augmenting their digital skills in the areas of marketing, design and product development. Through collaborative courses offered in partnership with other ASU colleges, students may combine the global management skills of the Master of Global Management with digital expertise.

Public Administration

Public Administration

New research is emphasizing that the millennial generation is increasingly motivated by values such as social justice and environmental stewardship and many graduates are looking for careers in the public and nonprofit sectors (Chamberlain, 2018). However, only 7% of federal employees are under the age of 30 (Curry, 2017). This mismatch between millennials' desire for meaningful work and their relatively low representation in the public sector highlights that many public administration programs are not meeting current market conditions. New programs are needed that integrate expert training in public administration with global management.

To meet this new need, Thunderbird School of Global Management has created the public administration concentration in the highly ranked MGM degree program in collaboration with ASU's Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions.

This concentration is intended for future leaders who want public service skills and experience as part of their global management repertoire and for students seeking roles within public institutions or roles that interact with those institutions, especially on matters where public policy overlaps with business or other global enterprises. The program is designed by Thunderbird's renowned faculty and allows students to take courses in public administration through Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions.

Students earn a broad skill set and solid foundational understanding of public administration, leadership, management and policy analysis in service to the public good. This program prepares students for leadership roles in governmental and nonprofit organizations around the world. Thunderbird School of Global Management has produced unique leaders for more than 70 years, leaders in every sector capable of tackling the world's greatest challenges. The alumni network comprises 45,000 graduates and 170 chapters around the globe.

Public Policy

Public Policy

Jobs in public policy are expected to grow 13 percent between 2014 and 2024 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1). In addition, the nonprofit sector has seen a 49 percent increase in paid wages from 2003-2013 (Gaddy, 2016). Together the growth in jobs and wages suggests a latent demand for workers trained in the area of public policy. To meet this market need Thunderbird has designed the Pubic Policy concentration within the Master of Global Management degree program.

The target audience for the concentration are students who would like to work in cross-sector roles within public and nonprofit institutions. Other students may use this concentration as a spring board into jobs in the private sector that have significant overlap with public agencies. In short, students will be prepared in both global management and public policy in order to meet the demands of an increasingly cross-sector economy.

Nonprofit Leadership Management

Nonprofit Leadership Management

In 2014 nonprofit organizations contributed $977 billion to the U.S. economy (Gaddy, 2016). Similarly, nonprofit leadership and management jobs grew 6.4 percent from 2016-2017 (EMSI, 2018). Not surprisingly, a new generation of workers is demanding jobs that both pay well and are purpose-driven (Field, 2017). Nonprofit organizations are poised to meet the double-bottom line mentality of millennials. Thus, Thunderbird has created the Nonprofit Leadership and Management concentration within the Master of Global Management degree program.

Because the lines between what types of functions a nonprofit or for-profit organization may play is increasingly blurry, we have designed a curriculum that is cross-sector in nature. The target audience for the concentration are students who would like to work in roles within nonprofit institutions, but want to bring business and global management lenses to their work.

Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable Tourism

Recent research indicates that 1 in 10 people are employed in a tourism related job (World Economic Forum, 2017). Another study showed that travelers are more likely to visit places if there are sustainable practices in place (Mandala, 2017). In addition, governments are recognizing the importance of sustainability, leading the United Nations to outline sustainable development goals (UN). As the tourism industry continues to adopt eco- tourism and suitability practices, a new set of skills is needed. In response, Thunderbird has designed the Sustainable Tourism concentration.

The target audience for the concentration is students interested in working in sustainable tourism, hospitality, travel and related fields. Through a collaborative sequence of courses offered in partnership with other ASU colleges, students will be able to work in and lead organizations that desire employees with global management and sustainable tourism skills.

Global Legal Studies

Global Legal Studies

Jobs in the legal professions are expected to grow 9 percent between 2016 and 2026 (Bureau of Labor Statistics 1). However, many legal firms are consolidating and outsourcing legal processing and support (Kane, 2018). As the demand for lawyers decreases, a converse increase in support services is expected (BLS 1). Similarly, nonlegal jobs increasingly require knowledge of law. From human resources to procurement, global perspectives on legal issues is a needed skill-set. To meet this market need, Thunderbird has designed the concentration within the Master of Global Management degree program. The target audience for the concentration is students with a desire to work in areas requiring knowledge of global legal issues, but who may not want to be lawyers. Other students may use this concentration as an introduction to legal studies and later pursue law school. Overall, you will be able to gain global management and legal expertise that is applicable to many organizational settings. This concentration is offered in collaboration with the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law as ASU.

Global Development and Innovation


Recent research reveals that graduate programs in international development are in high demand. In fact, Devex found that the master's in international development was number three in their survey of most demanded degrees (Devex, 2016). In a study of international development graduates in Canada, researchers found that over 86 percent of graduates were employed (Tiessen & Cameron, 2017). In order to meet this current demand Thunderbird has created the Development and Innovation concentration within the Master of Global Management degree program.


The concentration is relevant to development practitioners seeking to complement their skills and experience and to those interested in pursuing careers in international development agencies within and beyond government, as well as in nongovernmental organizations and community organizations. Students will be equipped with the analytical and practical skills needed to engage critically in issues around innovation and development, and to work across the intersections of innovation, development policy, and global management.

Global Health Care Delivery

Global Health Care Delivery

Due to the aging population of the U.S. and the world, many jobs of the future will involve health care services, including health care management and delivery. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that jobs in the area of medical and health care management will grow 20 percent between 2016-2026. The Bureau also estimates the median annual wage for health care managers is almost twice that of the U.S. median. This concentration will help to meet the growing need for health care related managers.

The target audience for the concentration are current or aspiring managers in health care that would like to hone their leadership and management skills and position themselves to move into leadership. Some health care practitioners, such as nurses and doctors, may also use the degree as a way to move from clinical practice into management. Students will gain perspectives on both global management and health care delivery.

This concentration is offered in collaboration with the College of Health Solutions.

Careers for computer and information research scientists are expected to grow 16 percent between 2016 and 2028 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics). Many companies report difficulties finding employees with solid systems, engineering, algorithmic, and data management backgrounds complemented by excellent managerial and leadership skills. To meet this market need, Thunderbird School of Global Management designed the Data Science concentration in conjunction with ASU’s School of Computing, Informatics, and Decision Systems Engineering (CIDSE), of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

The program is designed for graduate students who want to pursue an education in the area of data science. It is most suitable for students with a background in computer science or engineering (with data science coursework). The goal of this concentration is to provide students the knowledge and skills in designing scalable (parallel, distributed, and real-time) systems for acquiring, storing, processing, and accessing large-scale heterogeneous multi-source data and in using analytical tools to mine information from the data. The graduates will be able to pick and deploy the appropriate data management, processing, and analysis systems with the suitable structured or unstructured data model for the particular task and domain application needs. The concentration will meet the growing need for data scientists and engineers that can architect, implement, and manage large data systems and, thus, students will have a competitive advantage to secure employment.

Global Health Care Innovation

Due to an aging population, there is a greater demand for health care services. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, health care occupations are projected to add more jobs than any of the other occupational groups. Estimated growth is 13 percent from 2021 to 2031, adding approximately 2 million new jobs. Medical and Health Services Managers are projected to grow at 28% (much faster than average) during the same period, adding approximately 140,000 more jobs.

The pandemic has forced the healthcare industry to innovate more quickly than anticipated, particularly in the area of technology (e.g. virtual visits, contactless payments, new vaccines in record time). These technologies have helped and will continue to help organizations fill some of the gaps left by burnout or retiring employees. As the industry continues to use advanced technologies, it will be important for leaders and health services managers to understand how these systems work and how they can impact health outcomes

The target audience for this program is healthcare leaders and entrepreneurs who want to design, implement, and/or manage technology that will advance the healthcare industry in the 4th industrial revolution.

Design your own concentration

Students can elect to complete the Master of Global Management program without a concentration. Students without a concentration can select 12 additional elective credits to complete their 49 required credits for the MGM degree.

The STEM advantage

Master of Global Management concentrations that are STEM-certified meet special F-1 international student status requirements. This means that international students who graduate with an MGM with one of these concentrations qualify for a 24-month extension to their Optional Practical Training in the United States beyond the 12 months already provided to international students in non-STEM degrees.

Applied learning

The Thunderbird Global Challenge Lab (GCL) program is a capstone course at Thunderbird that engages a team of four to five Master of Global Management (MGM) candidates with a client in an advanced or emerging market. The team spends three weeks working on each project onsite with their client and one final week of debriefing on campus. Projects are tailored to the business needs of the client and provide sophisticated data and market analysis, strategy recommendations, and practical, effective plans for sustained growth. The Lab offers projects which are truly win-win propositions, creating value for companies and providing a unique, professional learning experience for our students.

One Global Place

Thunderbird's new global headquarters on ASU's Downtown campus is the world's most technologically-advance management and leadership building. With over 100,000 square feet, 31 million pixels of LED content, 1,600 square feet of displays, a VR language lab, a global decision theater, and a roof-top pub, just to mention some highlights.

Haas Digital Global Forum

The Haas Digital Global Forum at One Global Place serves as the center of the building and a convening space for our global community, in-person or remotely, boasting the latest technology anywhere in the world. Over 14 million pixels of high-resolution LEDs wrap the entire 360 degrees of the circular Global Forum, in addition to the 8-foot LED globe hanging from the ceiling.

Global Forum Events

The state-of-the-art 26 feet wide and 10 feet tall video wall in the Global Forum allows for stunning displays. During events, it can be used for presentations, live camera feeds, and data visualization.

Innovation Lab

Thunderbird's innovation lab houses the School's VR Language Lab, as well as other state-of-the-art technology such as the table-top computers that allow for collaborative working on custom-made touch-screen, interactive surfaces. There are nine multi-touch tables across the campus, each comprised of 55-inch ultra-narrow bezel optical touch LCDs that allow for next-generation collaboration.

Haas Digital Global Forum Globe

At the center of the Haas Digital Global Forum is the interactive globe. This globe has an impressive diameter of 8.2 feet and can be controlled via motion-responsive technology at the 18 foot wide control screen below.

Relax and socialize in One Global Place's global forum which can be transformed to host events, host a convocation ceremony, a student-led Regional Night, or host a World Cup match.

Classrooms

Our state-of-the-art classroom feature flexible layouts, multiple LED and projection displays, in-ceiling mics and video cameras to facilitate remote learning, and the latest technologies to enhance the classroom experience.

Innovation Lab

The innovation lab on the first floor of Thunderbird's global headquarters provides a comfortable space for members of our global community to come together to collaborate and socialize.

Africa and the Middle East Heritage Lounge

Each floor of One Global Place is connected by a regional Heritage Lounge. The second and third floors are connected by our Africa and the Middle East Heritage Lounge featuring comfortable furniture and relics from the Thunderbird archives from both regions.

Asia Heritage Lounge

The 3rd-floor Asia Heriate Lounge serves as yet another area for students and alumni to come together and socialize in a climate that reflects the school's global focus and heritage.

Latin America Heritage Lounge

Connecting the faculty offices on the 4th floor to the Dean's office and pub on the 5th floor is the Latin America Heritage Lounge. The space serves as a gathering space for faculty, students, and staff to socialize, study and celebrate.

2nd Floor Reception Area

One Global Place serves as a convening spot, not only for the global Thunderbird community and larger ASU community but also the Phoenix business, non-profit and diplomatic community. Our 2nd floor reception area welcomes visitors from around the world and provides great overviews of the Global Forum.

Meditation and Prayer Room

T-birds can take time for personal reflection in our Meditation and Prayer room on the 2nd floor. Two adulation rooms are available across the way for our Muslim students to prepare for daily prayer.

The Pub

Our Global pub located on the 5th floor is open to students, staff, and the public allowing them to build their networks by furthering connections beyond the classroom.

The Pub at One Global Place pays homage to the original and icon pub at the original campus in Glendale Arizona at the site of Thunderbird Airfield, where the school was founded 75 years ago. It incorporates original elements such as the licenseplates from around the world along the bar.

The 5th-floor pub serves as a great gathering point for socializing and fun and includes a shuffleboard underneath the iconic marlin from the old pub.

Roof-top Balcony

The Pub features a roof-top deck offering spectacular views of downtown Phoenix and comfortable dinning tables and lounge furniture to enjoy the Phoenix weather.

Classrooms

The flexible format of our classrooms allow for various types of layouts, including study group modules that facilitate collaboration with dedicated LED screens and whiteboards for each group.

Global Forum

When not being used for events, Thunderbird's global forum welcomes students, faculty, and staff with casual lounge space fit to enjoy the nearby Thunderbird Coffee shop.

Nestled between the building's glass facade and 2nd-floor balcony sits a comfortable lounge area where students and visitors can socialize, collaborate, or hold meetings while enjoying the views.

Alumni Balcony

Serving our 45,000-strong global alumni community is our second-floor alumni suite which includes dedicated conference room space, alumni services and staff, and the alumni balcony overlooking the One Global Place courtyard.
