Logos and brand marks

Elements of Thunderbird brand

The Thunderbird logo represents more than 80 years of global leadership, cross-cultural excellence, and transformative education. Reflecting Thunderbird’s unique place within Arizona State University, it honors the school’s distinguished legacy while aligning with ASU’s commitment to innovation, inclusion, and meaningful impact. Together, they represent a shared vision of preparing future-ready leaders for a connected world.

  • Always use original, high-quality logo files provided through the Thunderbird brand library. Logos may not be scanned, recreated, redrawn, or altered in any way.
  • Do not use bitmapped formats such as TIFF or PICT for print materials due to poor reproduction quality.
  • Do not create unapproved file types, including SVG versions.

Approved file formats

  • EPS: For print and large-scale applications (scalable, high-quality)
  • PNG: For digital and screen-based applications

Standalone Thunderbird logo

In limited cases, the standalone Thunderbird logo—including the ASU descriptive line “A unit of the Arizona State University Enterprise”—may be used. Written approval from the Thunderbird Office of Branding and Communications is required prior to use.

  • The symbol, wordmark, and ASU descriptive text must always appear together.
  • These elements may not be separated, rearranged, or modified.
  • When the co-branded Thunderbird–ASU logo is used, the ASU descriptive text is removed to avoid redundancy.

Icon-only usage

The Thunderbird bird icon and the ASU Sunburst must be used together as part of an approved logo configuration.

The only exception is official Thunderbird social media channel icons, where the Thunderbird bird icon may appear on its own.

Standalone use is not permitted in any other materials—including marketing, websites, presentations, signage, merchandise, or digital campaigns.

Executive Education logo

The Thunderbird Executive Education logo identifies programs and offerings within the Executive Education portfolio. It may be used only on approved executive education materials and must follow Thunderbird brand standards. Proper use ensures alignment with the broader Thunderbird brand while clearly distinguishing executive education offerings.

Guidelines for logo use

Clear space and placement

A protected area of isolation must surround the logo at all times.

  • Clear space is measured using Y, defined as half the height of the word “THUNDERBIRD.”
  • The logo must be surrounded by a minimum clear space equal to the full height of “THUNDERBIRD” (Y + Y) on all sides.
  • No text, images, or design elements may appear within this protected zone.

Always place the logo away from visually crowded or distracting elements.

  • Change logo colors
  • Rearrange logo elements
  • Place the logo inside shapes or containers
  • Make elements transparent or screened
